Benefit of the Social Tariff in Brazil

the service of social tariff is a federal government program that grants discounts of up to 65% on the electricity bill. According to the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), more than 7 million people who may be entitled to the Social Tariff are not part of the program yet.

Announcement

There are several reasons, but the main ones are the lack of information, or because they failed to follow the requirements to receive the discount. Indians and quilombolas can even gain total exemption, if they are within the criteria.

However, according to Aneel, some Brazilians who could receive benefits end up not taking advantage of them. This happens because the electricity bill is in the name of someone else and not in the name of the resident registered in the Cadastro Único.

There are also cases where the data of family members need to be updated in CadÚnico. Without this up-to-date information, the government system cannot recognize who needs to benefit.

How do I know if I can use the Social Tariff?

In order to take advantage of social tariff it is necessary that you and your family meet certain conditions required by the government. This discount benefit on electricity bills is directed to:

  • Families who are enrolled in the Single Registry with family income less than or equal to half the minimum wage;
  • Persons aged 65 or over or persons with disabilities who are part of the Continued Provision of Social Assistance Benefit (BPC);
  • Families that are part of CadÚnico with a monthly income of up to 3 minimum wages, and who live with a person with a disease where the treatment requires the continuous use of devices that require energy consumption.

Income is the sum of the individual income of each family member and division of the result by the number of people living at the same address. It is also necessary that the residence has the maximum consumption of electricity provided by Aneel, that is, without waste.

Subscription to the Social Tariff

Since the end of 2021, the Ministry of Citizenship has allowed families that are part of the Cadastro Único to be automatically included in the Social Tariff. In this way, it is necessary that you comply with the requirements and keep the data always updated in CadÚnico.

Every month, data is cross-referenced between the Ministry of Citizenship and energy distributors. Before, those interested needed to go to the distributors to register, now that is no longer necessary.

The discount starts to apply next month after activation. In addition to the reduction, whoever benefits from the social tariff receives differentiated conditions to negotiate overdue amounts on the energy bill.

What to do if you don't receive the discount?

If you were included in social tariff for more than a month and still haven't received the discount, the first step is to verify that the family's information is correct in the Cadastro Único, and that the account is in the name of the family head.

If everything is correct and updated, then just wait a few more days. If the delay persists, then the recommendation is to clarify your doubts at the social assistance service points in the municipality.

There may also be some inconsistency in the data. If so, they can be corrected at the point of care. So, don't waste time and look for the CRAS closest to you.

Final considerations on the Social Tariff

The cost of living is increasing and unfortunately the salary does not always follow this increase, as this saves as much as possible is essential, and with the social tariff you can do it more smoothly. Therefore, go to a CRAS and sign up for CadÚnico to participate.
